For Thanksgiving I volunteered to make and bring the pies….which meant making 3 pies with 5 kids. Kind of crazy but we actually had a lot of fun. Caedmon really wanted to make the pumpkin pie. He has had his heart set of that for the last number of months, actually I think since we planted pumpkins in are garden in the spring. He was really bummed when we got an early October snow/freeze and all the lovely pumpkins that we grew all turned to mush. Nevertheless he declared that he and Edric and Clint would be making the pumpkin pie. That left Leighton, Coppelia, Paxton and myself for the apple and we’d just figure out the pecan when the other two were finished. We all started by making homemade pie dough and then dove in to the fillings. Everyone was a super helper and my kitchen wasn’t totally destroyed when it was all done. With the pumpkin we also made sugar coated cranberries which were really good, and then for decorations which were suppose to be fall leaves, but because we have no fall cookie cutters I let the boys pick out shapes. So we ended up with a “pigeon” (which looked suspiciously like an eagle) and a “bat” (which looks more like a pterodactyl to me), because Caedmon’s current favorite book is “Real Pigeons Fight Crime”. So you know, we are bringing our high class literature into our pie making.
