2023 State Gymnastics Meet…

A couple of weekends ago we spent two mornings at two different State Gymnastics meets. The first morning was Paxton’s meet and he had quite the cheering section with all of us and my parents. It has been fun to watch him grow and get stronger in his events this year. Right towards the end of his meet we noticed someone warming up and beginning to practice in the far corner of the gym. Then during the awards ceremony since all the equipment was open we saw that person use the equipment and it quickly became evident who it was. Yul Moldauer, who was on the last Men’s Gymnastics Olympic team and who just the weekend prior won the All Around at the US Winter Cup, was using the equipment to prep for the upcoming worlds meet he was headed to. Very quickly all the athletes and parents in the stands quit watching the awards ceremony and started watching him. I did still cheer and watch Paxton get his 3rd place medal on vault. After awards Paxton went over and his coach took a photo of Paxton with Yul. The neat thing is that Yul was also adopted from South Korea. The next morning it was Leighton’s turn. He had one of his best meets of the season but finished just off the podium in a few events. Yul was there towards the end of Leighton’s meet as well and while Leighton was doing his parrallel bars routine Yul was warming up on the other set of bars and both did handstands on the bars at the same time but I was not coordinated to get a photo of both. Leighton was not brave enough after (or too teen) to go over and get a photo with Yul after and Yul was very busy working on the Pommel so I’m not sure he could have gotten one. He did watch some of the warm up things that Yul was doing and tried to remember those to include in his own practice. Paxton’s season is done and he’ll move up to level 4 next year, Leighton has Regionals this week.
