First Meet of the Season…

On Sunday Leighton had his first gymnastics meet of the season. it was the big home meet too which was fun because my parents came to watch and so did Leighton’s good friend Kieran. And being the first meet of the season it went like one would expect, some good things and some rough things and lots of places for improvement but good to get the first one under his belt. The meet was held at the Ranch Event Center and it was the second annual Sweetheart/Heartbreaker meet that our home gym, Premier Gymnastics puts on. So all day Friday, all day Saturday and Sunday morning were the girls (the Sweethearts) competing and then it finished out Sunday afternoon with the boys (the Heartbreakers). I was there all 3 days as the on site meet doctor and given that we had close to 400 if not more than that many kids competing we only ended up with one small chip fracture on an ankle for the entire weekend. A few bumps and strains but luckily it was a low acuity weekend with few injuries. The low part of Leighton’s meet was his floor routine, he was super nervous about it because of the roundoff backhandspring and as a result the whole routine just fell apart. Ultimately he ended up crashing into his coach and smacking his head on the ground pretty hard. It was tough on the mommy part of me to watch, but then he did something that made me really proud, he put that bad routine behind him and went straight on to the pommel horse and scored a 9.8 and took first on it. In the end he finished 3rd overall, just 0.3 points behind 2nd place and helped his team take 1st as a level 5 team and 3rd as a team for the entire meet. I got a photo of him with Honey and Grandpa and his friend Kieran, and I got Clint and the kids, but totally forgot to get a photo of him with all of us or even him and I….oh well. First meet is in the books and it will only go up from here as he knows what to focus on and how to improve.
