Making Things…

When Leighton went to the Mikulak Gymnastics Clinic back in November he took Clint’s shirt that he wears to meets and got it signed and also got his clinic shirt signed and asked if I would make them into pillows for his bed. So Monday afternoon he and I sat down and went to work. I first learned to sew on an old treadle machine the summer before I was in the 4th grade. I made for myself a one piece pant suit that I was so proud of. It had a huge white collar and was white with bright pink flowers (hello late 80s/early 90s). I didn’t and still don’t like pink but I fell in love with the fabric at the store and I’m sure my mom tried to talk me into sometime less “loud” but I was set on it. I loved going to the fabric store with my mom and even to this day just stopping at the fabric store brings on warm feelings and makes me happy. So I did the first one and he watched and then together we made the second one. I showed him how to thread the machine and then he set to it. He guided the material with his hands and I ran the speed of the pedal, just because there is so much initially when first starting out that I took that part out of the equation. It went really well and he was super proud of it. I told him we can make something again soon, maybe some jammie pants or something.
