We made a rule in our family that when someone turns 11 they have to make a meal a night at home. It will develop good cooking skills, an appreciation of food and planning and prepping and get them each ready for life beyond home. So Leighton got a cooking set and cookbook for his birthday and he sat down with me last week to plan out the meal that he was going to make. Saturday was the day that he got to pull it all together. He started in the morning prepping the chicken and marinating it in seasoning and buttermilk and then late that afternoon put together the rest of his meal. He also made peanut butter cookies, and humus from scratch with some fresh veggies from our garden. He did a great job, learned a lot and worked really hard. He was quite pleased (as were all of us) with his first meal.
